I know nowadays, everybody and their mother are creating sites looking halfway decent with the ease of WYSIWYG editors and photoshop... HTML is no longer a art only for the elite. We got idiots making sites now.. lol

I'm just curious if there's still a market out there for freelance professional webdesigners, or is the art of creating sites slowly just turning into an everyday hobby?

ya there is still a market out there, the sites that normal people make are decent for about 5 years ago, and there all temps. so tech. they did not make it meaning that someother web designer made big money making the temp. for like geocities and stuff...

im friends with a owner of a design company, now he pays 107 bucks a hour for the designers (photoshop, web, layout) my friend makes 10 bucks a hour for him drawing and doing b*tch work (take the trash out, get coffe)

so i think web design is still good money

this summer ill be working for him, cant wait =)

the big money is in making a GREAT site, 100% yours, something like yahoo, with games, and search engines, if you have a LARGE amount of user traffic that means you will have a large amount of people wanting to advertise on your site, and they will pay good money for a nice banner spot....

dont be a sell out and work a stable job with a company, be a true artist and take a risk and make your own site and promote it, even better start a web design company, im starting a advertising company ( a sub company of my film company im making)

but ya, damn i miss the old days, now all i use is dreamweaver, i forgot all the old texting ways =(

notepad to the end!! *rises his hands in a really corny gesture*..lol..

I (want to) believe that no WYSIWYG - users´ skills can outsmart the good´ol handwritten ones. And the thing with PHP, hey, you still need HTML, buddy..lol. :D

That is by far the most worthless advice I have heard in my entire life. Right now is about the worst possible time to give that advice. 2 years ago it would have still been bad advice, but it would have been a little more logical. Go try it and we'll see how well you do, but when you start working on your resume, go ahead and kick yourself in the tits. See how long you last as a starving artist. Try to make car payments, mortgage payments, try to pay all your bills being freelance. See how long it takes before you starting begging for a job at a company.

well ya, sorry it was like 3 am-ish when i typed that and i was a bit sick, but basicly ill re-phrase it, work for a big company, you will make more then enough money, but dont loose site of what you really are, make time for personal projects, my father is a good example of what happens when you just work and eat and sleep, so is my uncle, you never have free time to do what you love.....

i already have a kickass resume for education/teaching now im working on my resume for graphic design, ive already been offered a couple freelance jobs, and a few full time ones, but i would have to move, and that is not something im ready to do yet

Was it ever???? :P

sure you want to believe that too bad its dead wrong.

I'm sorry but anyone who hand-codes tables would get their ass whooped any day by someone who knows what they are doing with an editor. Why do people talk like the only people who use editors are people who don't know HTML.

Have you ever used Dreameweaver? GoLive? They are not evil things meant to dull the skills of a web developer. I set all my tables up in Golive now. its not practical to type them by hand anymore.

Obviously if you can't even understand HTML you aren't gonna get very far in other areas of webpages. But we already know those people suck. GoLive is merely a tool. Its not 'cheating' anymore then using photoshop is. They are merely tools. If the outcome is bad then its bad. Its not the tool's fault its the user.

DPQ, you´re absolutely right. Can´t say that I could code a table faster than dreamWeaver..
But I haven´t got dreamWeaver or any other WYSIWYG editors, because I haven´t got* the money to buy them..

(*read: Won´t spend my money on them)

But, as you said; they are tools. Maybe I should get it in my thick head some day..lol..
*opens notepad again...twitching like hell*
:D

Ya know theres HTML-Friendly editors out there for FREE. I don't know any good ones off hand that i could recomend but it still seems that Notepad is the worst possible choice. You need something that has HTML in mind that at the very least color-codes it and line #s. You have no idea how helpful that is.
