Hey guys,

How do I get a site to look the same on every screem resolution.

If I build it it on 1024 it will be too big for 800
If I build it on 800 it will be to small for 1024

theres 2 ways you can do this (that i know of)

1 of those is to do a browser redirection to a version of the site designed specifically for that resolution. you would do this if your entire site was a sliced up image.

the other way is if you just have a few images inside tables, you can set the widths using % and then it will scale to the screen.

sorry, if that was unclear, i typed that in a hurry

Browser redirection is dumb. Just don't use a huge background on your site and it will be fine. Just make a tileable background, if you have to make one at all. Then use a 100% table or div, and make everything stretch to whatever size the browser is.

I run 1280 by 1024 resolution, but my browser window is always around 900 x 600. So your browser detection thing would send me a page for 1280 x 1024, and I'd have to scroll all over the place just to see it all. bad web design.

horizontal scroll=bad web design

vertical scroll=good/normal web design, depending on type of site, and content.

the way you said

and I'd have to scroll all over the place just to see it all. bad web design.

kinda made me think that you mean ALL scrolling is bad web design. unless that is what you meant, in which case i have to disagree.

i dont think horizontal scrolling in itself is bad, i think it is just the fact that you have to scroll in 2 different places.

if i saw a page with nothing but horizontal scroll i dont think it would be bad

It is bad to have to scroll all over the place just to see some background image. vertical scrolling is fine, as long as you try to keep the important stuff "above the fold" or visible without having to scroll. at least on professional sites. do whatever you want on a personal site.

horizontal scrolling is annoying. imagine reading long forum posts by scrolling horizontally rather than vertically. that would suck.

but thats because text is naturally read from left-right & top to bottom.

if you are looking at a site showcasing images with a little text or something else like that, i dont think it would matter
