Advertisers taking over browsers
Internet messages may be placed on toolbars soon

Beware, Web surfers. Soon not even that dull, gray toolbar at the top of your Internet browser will be safe from advertisers.

Yeah, but the difference:
Users don’t have to download any software to set the process in motion.

how can you add a server-side ad to a browser? wouldnt that mean that the ad wasnt really a part of the browser but a universal mandatory ad on all sites?

Microsft and Netscape already allow their browser software to be manipulated by 3rd party software developers. They're just taking it a step too far.

There'll be a way to turn it off, but it's the fact that they are choosing to manipulate my software, without my expressed consent. That doesn't sit well with me.

true,true

although there will most likely be a way to turn it off and if there isn't an option within IE or netscape, there will be other sources that will make a patch to disable it or something. there is always a way around these type of problems.
