A while back I gave the people here access to my server for hosting images for use on this forum. I only made one "Real" rule. No porn. Well. It seems someone thought it would be funny to upload several Mpegs onto the server. Thats person will be happy to know that several emails have been sent to their ISP for violating the TOS they agreed to when activating thier account. I am still thinking about how I am going to handle this with-in this forum... I'll have to talk to Pank about that.

I made no "bones" about what I would do if my server was abused. I use this FTP site for my clients and friends,(Of which the person in question is neither.) and my clients, friends nor myself care to see that garbage.

To those of you who have files on my server, you have 24 hours to get them off if you want them. I am sorry someone had to **** it up for everyone. I was trying to be nice, its a shame.

I'll be sending my clients emails with the new password tonight and tomorrow it will be changed. again.... I'm sorry.

that sucks big time!!
I'm glad I've started paying for my hosting. Well, maybe you'd make some exception for certain people to have their images in. Make a rule like emailing you for the password or something.

But I think you've made up your mind and that beeatch should get the **** him/her deserves

Yup. Stupidity prevailed again. Not too sure why people who know what will happen if they violate a TOS still do it anyway, but it never fails to happen.

Chris...

It was with great generosity and no-so-inconsiderable risk that you made your offer to host images, giving free and open access to what is usually kept sequestered from the general populace. Your rules about the FTP server's use and/or abuse were perfectly clear and fair. Anyone who took advantage of the space you provided must have also been exposed to those rules. This much is a given.

Most people have acted with propriety, and it's always a good thing to thank them and acknowledge their good choices. It's always a good feeling to place trust out on the table and find that it doesn't get stepped upon and mangled.

Then....the inconsiderate human-putrid-jagload-in-every-crowd comes along and ruins for everyone. He or she ABSOLUTELY KNEW that— in no uncertain terms— what they were doing was against the very simple rules you laid out. And by doing so, they not only deprived all the compliant users of the service you so freely offered, they stole one more bit of your trust. In my mind, that's tough to forgive.

I can't stress this strongly enough»»»»»PUBLISH THIS PERSON's NAME IN A PLACE WHERE THOSE (S)HE ASSOCIATES WITH WILL SEE IT«««««

The person who did this should be treated to some public humiliation for doing what they did. Getting into trouble has no value if the person receiving the punishment is entirely spared from the derision and scorn of those he associates with. It's not beyond the realm of belief that the miscreant who uploaded the MPEGs did so knowing that you'd close up shop. Or perhaps they did so in a misguided attempt to test your mettle and resolve. Either way, they behaved poorly, in a way that is not condoned in any society (and yes, Forum communities like this fit the definition of a society). The only way to send the message in a way that will be both forceful and somewhat satisfying to that sense of justice we all have a bit of is to publish their name.

This doesn't have to be accompanied by any lengthy personal attack, but this person needs to know how you feel and how it affected you. They deserve it and you owe them that.

One other alternative:

If the person who ruined the good thing visits here....

Are you a big enough person to "call yourself out," own up to what you did, explain what you were thinking when you did it, and offer a real and sincere apology for it?

That would go a long way toward showing that you aren't entirely bereft of any honorable characteristics.
