I never get contracts. But I highly suggest you do. Because I get screwed out of money all the time.

We only do contract work. We do 1 contract for the development of the site, we do 1 contract for the hosting of the site, and we also have 1 contract that says we are not liable for any lawsuits brought up against the site.

Send me contracts too. I'm tired of getting screwed. But I'm not a lawyer.

I'm guessing my company has contracts, but I'm not at liberty to go digging them out and scanning them, I don't think.

I have only done 2 freelance sites. Each time I had a contract agreement for them to sign. Basically it stated that any work I do for their site is time they pay for. If they decide they don't like the design of the site, they still owe me for the hours I spend building the prototype. They sign this contract before we even begin discussing what they want the site to do.

during the process of me developing their site, I constantly update them on my progress and the time I have spent on it. with each update, I get them to approve any graphics, content or other design elements that will go into the site. I protect myself this way if it comes to the final product and they say they never approved of some element, I have a signed document proving they did.

Once I give them the final product, I walk them through the entire site live on a test server. I make sure that everything works the way it is supposed to and it meets the requirements we set before the development stages. After they have reviewed the final product and they are satisfied with the results, I have them sign one last document that states that they accept my design, the hours I spent on it in total and the figures calculating the total money they owe me.

Basically, I cover my ass in all stages of the development of the site. I don't care if they don't use my site, but a notarized document with their signature is very good to have incase they try to shaft you.

I probably should have done that since I made two mock-ups for someone, then they decided that I didn't make their site fast enough even though they never gave me any information and wanted their money back. I just gave them their money back to get them off my back because there were stupid.

Self emplyment sucks.

But then, so does regular employment.
