oh yeah...

i just realized that i didn't really specify what i meant.

I was referring to this whole thing about the gif format being copyrighted and any website that uses them is going to have to pay. blah blah blah. this has been floating around for a while.

anyone have any thoughts on this?
anyone ever heard of this?

I heard about it once. But didn't really think it was serious or even possible, so I just erased it from memory.

I think it's ridiculous, and I don't see how that could actually ever happen, let alone be enforced.

This started in the mid-90s. I remember the old DOS image editing program NeoPaint removing its GIF saving capability due to this GIF ownership issue.

PNG is fine and all, but so far, its still not very well supported in browsers. You can't animate PNG-8, and PNG-24 file sizes are huge at times. While new standards could be made and implemented into future browsers, that currently isn't happening.

Frankly, I'd like to see a real animated .jpg format come out to allow for compressed 24bit color animations without having to resort to Macromedia Flash to do it.

why would "they"
and how could "they"
do that?

it's like trying to charge people
money for using certain brands of toilet paper
on every odd # hour and on the days
that are 4 days after every holiday, but 1 month before the 12th
of the next month...

:D
