Hey, I'm bored so I thought I'd start a thread about something other than Photoshop. What I want to know is, do you consider yourself a geek and are you proud of it? (whatever your answer happens to be)
I am a geek.
I wear glasses, I spend too much time in front of the computer, my girlfriend dumped me, and I listen to weezer.
Not too long ago I bought a 1200 page book on 3DSMax and I enjoy reading it.
I daydream about how I am going to tackle the task of overclocking my AMD K6-2 400 to 1Ghz.

So post your little story about what makes you tick. This forum needs a little more life to it than just "How do I make kool text effects", "How do I do this?", and "Look at this". IMHO. So come on! Get typin'

Just sitting in front of your computer reading computer books doesn't make you a 'geek'. Losing your girlfriend because of your addiction to an electronic box that makes pretty colors on a CRT definatly does not constitute 'geekness'.

Being a geek is not just reading computer books. There is a whole state of mind to being a geek. People who experiement with the hope of learning something are geeks. Those who aren't afraid to try something new and different even though it isn't popular or "trendy" are more geek than anything, although it is becoming "popular and trendy" to call yourself a geek. Luckily, I was dubbed a geek by my highschool chums long before the computer age came into effect and 13 year old kids starting bragging about being 'nerdy'.

Why I am a geek. Not only do I know computers well. I have certifications to prove it. Along with that, I am an avid history buff. I also like reading books. Any book. Not just computer related. I will try anything once.

I am also a former phsyics major. I gave it up because of my utter distaste for calculus. But I still like to learn how things work. What makes the earth go around it's axis while moving around the sun.

I like to discuss the origins of mankind with people intelligently. Not this "God created it all in 7 days" stuff. The actual theories behind why we are here, how we got this way and what events will lead to our eventual demise.

I spend approximatly 50 hours a week behind a computer because it is my job to do so. When I am not behind my computer I am drinking beers with friends, looking at the cuties by the pool and doing other stuff that some folks consider odd for a 24 year old man. These are the things that make me a geek. Not my collection of books:

3 on HTML - CSS - JavaScript
1 on the vi editor - linux text editor best editor other than notepad
1 on php
2 on mysql
2 on c/c++
8 on Novell Netware 5
6 on Microsoft Windows NT
4 on webdesign
12 from highschool up to college.
10 ranging from Aldus Huxley's "A Brave New World" to "A ClockWork Orange"
