I'm sure you all frequently see pages with news. Some pages have it going all the way down (example: http://thecoldshop.com), while others, keep it conservative and in a scrollable area. (like on the team photoshop main page) I was wondering, which is prefered? To scroll or not to scroll? Thats my question. POLL>> [[in the poll, "yes for scrolling" means u prefer it in a small area (just to clear up any confusion) and "No" would mean that you'd rather have it going down the entire page]] K...vote away!! |

Depends on the scrolling. Scrolling iFrames is bad. Unless it's one with the little elevator box thing so you can quickly move up and down. I hate having to wait for stuff to scrool down in those iFrames that are set at a certain speed.

I prefer to not have the news in one of those DHTML scrollable areas... Why? Cause just like everything else, it's been done to death. One person did it, it caught on with a couple other people, but it still wasnt popular. Now it has become an excuse to not deal with content and how it should interact with the page. Everyone and their grandmother has one of those scrolling layers. I have seen some very creative uses of it...those I mostly like. Then there are the others where people just downloaded the source code and put no effort into it at all. That guys news does scroll too far. He should have 5 or 6 news posts and the rest should be archived. |

Actually, I think this is a pointless question. Do i like scrolling? yes! Do i hate scrolling? yes! it depends on the content, the design, the technology used, the audience, the amount of text and graphics on the page, etc... be a good designer and take these things into account and you may find yourself on both sides of the heated 'to scroll or not to scroll' debate! on a personal note: i don't think those dhtml scolling things are worth a damn. like anything easy (easy meaning to download and implement) and popular they are overused and quite often used badly. i think designers use them as an excuse for dealing with large amounts of information in a more effective way. i think that comes out of a flash-centric way of designing and thinking of how a page should work. (what that means, i have no idea, but it made sense when it popped into my head) |

You guys are all wacked! Take the time to read the posts. Clearly I agree with Fig on this matter. Re-read what he wrote and the whole thing will make sense. Sheesh...
