...only a few hundred pants ..that got very brown the actual damage was not serious - a few broken mirrors here and there...I understand it's because it was a "vertical" quake - it didn't swing things around....except for unfortunate souls like me (my apartment is at the 11th floor) |

Wow mihai, glad things are ok. Where I live, I'm sitting on a virtual time bomb. A good sized quake is due at anytime. http://www.pgc.nrcan.gc.ca/seismo/recent/50.htm <-- A link I check daily, just to see what's happening around my area. |

mihai, what's the building codes and standards over there? I know through talking to you somewhat about Romania, but what happens when a 7.0+ earthquake hits? Are most buildings capable of a strong quake? I always am concerned since I live in an older home, that when I sleep, I get a big beam of wood across my forehead if the ground starts shaking big time. Or when I lived in my apartment, I was really afraid the top two floor would squish me. I know we have strong building codes, yet I still freak out.

well - quakes weren't exactly foremost in the minds of the constructors here... until 1974. When a 7.2 quake killed about 400 people and levelled a few city blocks. so all buildings that were constructed after that - are supposed to hold through a 7.8 quake. Unfortunately my building was constructed in the mid 50s.... but it was built by russian engineers and those are supposed to make strong things hihi. We're not that scared about quakes here - they're unusual - and extremely rare...maybe that's why it was so weird an experience...
