The only REAL security you really need for Windows is a god damn brain. 5 years and running clean without anti-virus programs.

Yes. I've been using windows all my life, since 1996... and I've seldom had a serious virus. With WindowsXP. I've NEVER had one. My computer runs flawlessly.

Yes. I've been using windows all my life, since 1996[/quote]Heh heh heh...M_J's only 8 years old.

Seriously though, this isn't exactly a new threat. Jpg's and executable code, I mean. A teacher of mine in high school told me about it a while back when I brought up someone sending me an attached picture in an e-mail. We were talking at the time about viruses in attachments.

Anyway, U 23's right about mac's ease of use, and lack of downtime/maintainance time outweighing their price. I do agree however, that virus authors design their program to screw as many people as possible. That's how they get their jollies, and that's why they target Windows. It's just the fact that macs make up such a small part of the market that they haven't been screwed with yet. Mac's can be affected by code just as anything else can, just that the language is diffeerent, and not as widely known.

One of the best writeups on the subject of "windows is only insecure because everyone uses it", ever.

"My answer to question posed earlier — why are Windows users besieged with security exploits, while Mac users suffer none? — is that Windows is like a bad neighborhood, strewn with litter, mysterious odors, panhandlers, and untold dozens of petty annoyances. Many Windows users are simply resigned to the fact that their computers contain software that is not under their control. And if they’ll tolerate an annoying application that badgers them with pop-up ads, well, why not a spyware virus that logs every key you type, then sends them back to the creator? (That’s a real virus, by the way, Korgo, which hit Windows at the end of May and is spreading quickly.)

The Mac is like a good neighborhood, where the streets are clean and the crime rate low. You don’t need bars on your windows in a good neighborhood; you don’t need anti-virus software on the Mac."

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

that is GENIUS!!

Reminds me also of a spymac article I read, which addressed the discussion of Apple's comparatively small market share as a testament to their 'inferiority'. They cited that in the automobile world, Fords, though cheaper, are undeniably poorer quality vehicles, but make up a vastly larger part of the market as compared to BMW's and Mercedes'. The same arguments arise that fords are cheaper to repair and maintain, have parts that are easier to come by, but have a typical lifespan of no more than 150,000 miles. Furhtermore, Fords grow exponentially more unreliable as they approach that mileage.

Vehicles such as BMWs, Saabs, Volkswagens, and Mercedes Benz conversely have lifespans of up to 250,000 miles, and rather often more. Though their parts have in the past been more difficult to come by, this trend is rapidly changing. They require far less 'regular' maintainance than Fords, and suffer far fewer catastrophic breakdowns, such where repair bills rival the price of the car. Furthermore, they retain their value far better than Fords.

Yet despite the above stated, and widely agreed upon reasons, BMWs and Mercedes make up a far smaller part of the American automobile market than Fords do. The most typically cited reason for this discrepancy is cost. However, in terms of longevity, and overall repair cost, as well as time spent on repairs (time not being spent driving, or having the ability to be driven) a BMW would have been a wiser choice.

See what I'm saying? Anyway, I'm done for now.

Well said, well said, the cars are a perfect example. My dad commutes 90 miles a day, so he got a BMW, and has NEVER had a problem with it. He just bought a new one last year, his other one last him 5 years, 135,000 miles, and he gave that to my sister so he could have a new one.

Exactly like an apple, just as you said. Get a mac and it will last you far longer then any PC will.
