MSZ, both bills before Congress are supported by DEMOCRATS only. If Kerry is elected, you would likely see the draft go through, not Bush. -S 89 was introducted by Senator Ernest Hollings, a Democrat from South Carolina, who, may I note, is not running for re-election again (big surprise). -HR 163 was introducted by Charles B. Rangel, a Democrat from New York.
It was in protest for the war in Iraq… Like if we’re going to fight stupid wars why not get everyone into the fight other than a whole crap load of poor people. Yeah they’re serious but can’t you see their side? I think we wouldn’t need a draft if the Senate didn’t pass a bill last June, to increase the size of the Army by 20,000 persons. A month earlier the House voted to add 30,000 soldiers and 9,000 Marines by 2007. Hmm... |

No, I can't see their side. Why are you assuming that only poor people elist in the military? And even so, it is your opinion to force the rich people to join the army? How can you be for equal treatment under the law when your reasons for supporting a draft would be to get more rich kids in the military. The bill you mentioned that was passed in June, you must remember, was passed in defiance of both the Bush Administration and of Army leaders. Bush did not want the extra 20,000 troops. The addition of 20,000 was also optional, the Army is not required to enlist 20,000 more people, but were given the option to do so by that bill. A draft is pointless for far more reasons than I have the space for here. The most important being that the people who are drafted, are unlikely to be faithful to the cause. Do you think all the officers out there want babysitting jobs, trying to get untrained, unskilled commandos to do their 'forced' jobs? Another point is that we have at least 1,200,000 personnel currently enlisted. The only reason I foresee that we would need to reinstate the draft would be if we were invaded by a foreign county, such as China. |

Maybe we could leave this as a "wish you good luck sidez" thread and leave the politics out of just one thread. He doesn't live here and is going away. I'm guessing he really doesn't care about a draft over here. I know if I were him I'd have better things on my mind. |

The bill you brough up was trying to be passed for a different reason. The issue isn't "If Kerry is elected we'll have a draft." It's "If Bush wants to go to war despite everyone we should make everyone serve, not just the out of highschool students who need money for college and yadda yadda." |

My mate is in the Norwegian Army. He's spended his whole week laying out in the wood "shooting" people. Up in the coldest northern part of norway :S I can prolly be lucky and don't go. Be safe! But try to make the best out of it, you'll prolly meet a bunch of crazy people you can have fun with |

Not really. I'm going through the Physical Training Phase. Pretty much they're building up our stamina and strength. So far, the only military related training was the 3km route march. 30+kg of stuff on our backs including a dummy M-16 rifle and the Standard Obstacle Course. Other than that, is pretty fun. Considering you're not going through it alone. My disruption test is in 2 weeks. If I pass, I'll get to enjoy civilian life for 2 weeks |
