Apparently, then, there must be a lot of simpletons who haven't tried IM file transfer, or can't figure out how to get it to work. Yes, I understand that the file transfer has to make any number of server hops, beginning and ending with each participant's ISP's servers. Those servers are connected with fatter, faster pipes to each other than either of us are to our ISP's, so we take them out of the equation; The speed is not limited by server-to-server transfer. We know that. The speed of transfer is WAY faster than my upload speed would ever allow, as determined by the cap that Comcast places on my account. We know that, so we discount that as the determining factor in how the file is being transferred. File transfer happens at a speed that seems on par with what the recipient's optimal download speed. That is evidenced by how quickly I am able to "send" a file. My business transfers are as fast as they could possibly be, again, because I contend that when I send something, I'm not REALLY sending it (which would be limited to MY upload speed), but I am, in fact allowing my clients to DOWNLOAD from my system. How else would you explain me being able to "SEND" a 100 MB file in 6 minutes, which could not possibly happen given my 256kbps upload speed cap as set by Comcast? My client(s), also running Comcast cable or Sprint Business DSL lines, are also getting (optimally) a 3Mbps download speed. I think we're skirting around the same issue here, but none of us are explaining it well enough. I do think my explanation is closer, though. It's only logical. I just don't know much about the transfer protocols that make this type of file transfer work the way it does. I'd welcome some clarification...just don't strain my feeble brain!! |
