Spiderman has gone to India.

"The Green Goblin villain will be replaced by Rakshasa, an Indian mythological demon that has shape-shifting abilities."

Yeah, I read this the other week. I think it's really just a gimmick whereby the production company for the Spider Man movies can get a piece of the action in India's HUGE film industry. American movies are commonly translated into other languages, bengali included, but they're hoping I'm sure that Spider Man 2 (the release of which this comic's debut will coincide with) will enable SM2 to be as big a blockbuster there as it will be here.

Either way, it's just another way of repackaging the same ol' thing, and telling someone else it's brand spankin' new. And if you think I wasn't serious about the Indian Film Industry, it does exist, and is even more active than hollywood here is. We call it, somewhat jokingly "Baliwood", but they make about 3 times more films yearly than America does.

Why do I know this? Where do you think the name Ganguly came from? It was shortened from Gangopadhayaya to better mesh with the english language when my step father moved here from Calcutta in the early 60's.

In short, I think the Spider Man india idea is kinda asinine, although it'll make someone a couple of bucks.

Yah it does seem completely repackaged which is pretty lame.

I have a feeling it’ll be a big hit with the younger audiences and the older fans will probably get the American version dubbed in there own language. Kind of like how we take Japanese anime here and dub it in English or stick with English subtitles and then maybe change the cartoons for children. (example: Power Rangers).

It seems common sense if it helps them tap into a hitherto ignored market. The Asian (I mean Indian) market is vast and cinema one of the most popular pastimes, surely not converting Spiderman would be ignoring a huge market?

I still think it’s amusing never the less.

I’d probably feel the same way if China took Mr. Ed and turned the horse into a panda.
