The new ship is also controlled by state-of-the-art computers using a Windows NT operating system.

I just really thought this was interesting. Thought you guys might too. I'm into all the whole history channel war kind of stuff. :D

Now when 16 year old hackers sink one of these ships we can blame it on Al-Quada. :p

Well if they used OSx all the Navy boys/gals would be snobs and expect cappucinos with their eggs bene. :P

But realistically, I can't think of a worse idea than to use NT. How many ATM's do you see with the embedded NT kernel crashing? I've seen several this year already. Not to mention the NT 4 kernel source was leaked. Or at least parts of it. Especially with all the embarrasing comments pointing out the obvious *ahem* "fixes" so it'd work with older/other software. M$ must have given them $hitloads of research grants to pull that off.
Kind of suck to be in the middle of a battle and have to "reboot".

Well I would hope that by "a Windows NT operating system" they mean Windows 2000, XP, or 2003. To use a 10-year-old operating system would be about as ridiculous as making it out of carbon fiber.

Yah making the hull out of carbon fiber wouldn't give it a whole lot of protection. We could probably train a bunch of dolphins to ram and sink one of those things.

But if you can't find it, how can you sink it? DUM DUM DUM.

Well we can sink subs, and so far there isn't a ship including these that match a subs stealth. Dum Dum Dum.

You'd hope, but they still use NT4 on a lot of embedded stuff...

You'd be very surprised at how dated the software they use is. Some of it is not embedded either. back when I worked for the printshop almost 2 years ago, we did alot of work for contractors who trained naval technicians on repairing equipment. About 30 manuals crossed my desk on Windows NT.

State of the art, my ass. What "art" would that be ? the art of slow pantomime or the art of crashing when put under pressure?...Windows NT...WOW...I hope they mean NT5.1 (XP)...back in day I once wrote a SET commend (a commandline variable/math tool) that caused a bluescreen on any NT4 machine on any account...it was 15 characters long....I was 17 at the time.
