The least smoggy metropolitan area is Ames, Iowa

...Those of you not living the U.S. likely won't get this.

LA is horrible, it is like you are breathing pure iron. That is how most of California is those, as you can see from the stats. Kinda sucks, hope they can find ways to cut that down.

Won't get the locations talked about or the pollution? Europe has some very polluted places. Same as Canada. I hope you weren't thinking that the US are the only first world countries that cause pollution and the rest of us are too under developed. Not that its something to be proud of...

It's terrible when a warning comes on the tv telling young children and old folks to stay inside. I'd hate to live in any area like this.

The air burns my eyes whenever I go to LA. Usually take about a day to get use to it. You still know the pollutions there, its just that your eyes don't feel like there on fire afterawhile.

You know I hear often from people in Vancouver about how bad the pollution is up here in the Lower Mainland, and I am like, "Huh? what pollution?" My family all lives down in and around LA and I would say it is the most polluted place I have been to besides the street I lived on in Orissa when the poor families heated their dinners with coal and the time I spent in Calcutta. Some days LA isn't too bad, but I have been down there when you couldn't see farther than about 8 blocks until the smog made the city disappear.

But then again nothing is as bad as the "Ghost Town" area of Chernobyl:

http://www.kiddofspeed.com --> this is a really great site by the way. Not from a designer's perspective, but the story is disturbing...

Hope has the worst pollution out of anywhere in the Lower Mainland. It all gets pushed there but stops because of the the Coquihalla mountains. It's pretty gross, but doesn't at all compare to that of Toronto. But then there Chilliwack isn't there? Hehe, that place smells terrible.

I saw that Chernobyl site a few weeks back. I have to say, I don't usually feel moved by many things, but that site definately opened my eyes. Just unreal...

Yeah. It is pretty nuts how they sent in all those front liners and they were fried. Never told what happened and were not prepared for a nuclear disaster at all. It would make for a nice documentary.

The scary thing is, is that there is tons of nuclear dust and crap that has settled over the land. All it would take is a moderate sized earthquake to kick it all up again and spread it even further across the land. There are so many other elements that the public isn't really aware of. In fact, I believe the plant isn't going to even be 100% shut down until 2010 or something. The real crazy thing is all the people that believe that they are immune to the radiation and everything. 17 year olds with Thyroid cancer, just terrible. There are a strong core of people that are too attached to leave. It's amazing the different perspectives two societys can have. I have a Ukranian background. I should ask my grandparents if it's affected our family at all.
