I got a letter (in the actual mail, haha) from optimum online, my cable internet provider. They said that they had received an email from Universal Motion Pictures concerning illegal filesharing of one of their copyrighted works from my IP. The whole thing was attached, and they knew it all - the movie (scarface), the infringement source (BitTorrent), the filename, file size, date downloaded, whatever.

I just got real scared, even though this was a warning and no damage was done. I deleted it of course, but i just god damn scared. Thoguh I wonder how they would have known. Isn't bit torrent a secure filesharer? how would they know unless I fileshared directly with a Universal studio person? I just dont know, but I am wondering abotu the extent of privacy invasion that they are going to to figure this kind of thing out.

edit. this is what it said:

Title: Scarface
Infringement Source: BitTorrent
Initial Infringement Timestamp: 8 Apr 2004 04:20:51 GMT
Recent Infringment Timestamp: 8 Apr 2004 20:02:10 GMT
Infringer Username:
Infringing Filename: Scarface.xl.3ivx.mov
Infringing Filesize: 1458304667
Infringers IP Address: 67.81.40.142
Infringers DNS Name: ool-4351288e.dyn.optonline.net
Infringing URL: 67.81.40.142:6883/Scarface.xl.3ivx.mov

among other things.

Someone tell me something o_O

(By the way, if this is not an appropriate topic for this board since it considers filesharing, then feel free to delete it, moderators..)

I deleted it of course

why'd u go and do that?? First you just ::cough:: admitted you had the file, second even a secure delete that overwrites the file randomly and sets the lenght to 0 bytes could still be recovered. Somehow i doubt the FBI/CIA/NSA etc is going to dig deep into your HDD for scarface. You should enjoy your movie!! I say go download an undelete util, pop some damn corn, lower the lights and watch it lol

The only way i'll take action is if a black apache hovers over my house while a few shady dudes dressed in full body armor zip down a couple of cables onto my lawn and proceed to storm my house. Then i'll freak :D

Or if I still have time, i'll proceed with plan X.

Plan X:
- Pull quick release on hard drive cage
- Remove offending drive
- Replace with clean dummy hard drive
- Place offending drive into a zip lock bag
- With shovel, bury drive w/ bag in backyard.
* Be sure to cache sites dealing with charities for children and greenpeace on dummy drive

All it takes is a Universal employee having the file on BitTorrent and seeing who downloads it.

Nos.

heh Plan X should be more like
"unscrew top of harddrive, place in microwave for 30 seconds, let cool and enjoy"... "buy new microwave because old one exploded"

check out the forums on www.suprnova.org a lot of people get those letters. And a lot of people get a lot of those letters... And a lot of people that get a lot of those letters keep downloading, and all that happens is that they get more letters.

well how do you think any of the people are caught? you share something they have your ip. When you are downloading someting off bit torrent, open up command promt and type in netstat-n and see all the lovely IPs of everyone who is connected to that torrent. All universal had to so is download their movie's torrent and they have everyone.

I may or may not have constantly downloaded movies and if I just possibly did I never recieved letters. So I am safe for now, hypotetically speaking...*shifty eyes*
