I wasn't really sure where to post this so forgive me if this isn't the proper place.

At last my domain name has caught up with me.

For about 3 years I’ve had the domain flackstudios.com. The idea behind the name was formed from my screen name I’ve used for so many years which is FlackBait. I’m getting towards the end of school and I’m starting to take classes like Corporate Communications, Corporate Identity, and Professional practice. In these class I’m starting to really finalize my stationary and my whole identity all together. What this means is that I’m really dissecting everything about my logo and my whole identity that I wish to get out there when I join the work force when I’ve get my BA.

My problem is this…Flack according to the dictionary means “a slick person who can turn any criticism to the advantage of their employer.” That’s the actual meaning but it has a completely different meaning to me.

Here’s what I was hoping to find out from you guys.

1.) Do you think of Flack as being really negative? I mean when you hear flackstudios.com do you literally think “ok this guys a flack?” Or does it sound more like a name a designer would use which could hold a completely different meaning? Does the name sound offensive?

2.) When you hear the word Flack what do you think of? As an example do you think of Flak like as in ww2 shrapnel and all that?

3.) Should I work with my domain name to create a positive image for myself or should I “can” the whole domain and come up with a new company name and get a new domain?

I have mixed feelings about this because a lot of people don’t really know the true definition of Flack spelt Flack instead of Flak. So I’m not sure if it’s extremely important to get rid of my domain and come up with something new since my work, who I am as a person, and the whole feel behind my style and design isn’t really controversial or anything.

What do you guys think?

in my (very) personal opinion it's not a great name. It kinda makes me think of a wet thing hitting the pavement. I think it's one of those words that sound dirty although they aren't .... like "briefs" - in "show me your briefs"
also "bait" is something you want to do to clients but not something you tell them right off the bat...I dunno if you're using the screen name with clients but ...yeah don't sound right to me. I also think that "flakstudios" lacks ...speed. I don't know how to put it else but when I hear it...the two words that make the name "meet" with three consonants... "kst" there's no flow, you have to take a deliberate pause... I don't want to ruin your fun...it's just my feelings. I may be a minority...

Maybe choose a new name for your corporate identity.. FlackBait for your personal stuff.. Like I use Sidez for corporate and Phex for my personal site.

I always thing of flak when i see your name. It also makes me think you catch a lot of flack because you cause trouble. I'd pick something else.

I english skills aren't that great so I don't really think much about flack or flak but the only thing I don't like is the studios.
There are just SO many studios, design urls out there so imo it's just noo not one more...
They are impossible to remember.

I don't think it's that big of deal. Let the work speak for itself.

On the other hand, domains are cheap... Your call. ;)

Mihai – Yah I don’t think it would be a good idea using my screen name with clients either. Pretty much I plan on just having a site up for my work but I plan on working for a design firm. I’m not really interested in doing the whole freelance thing. That maybe be something I do if I can’t find a job right away so I’ll have to take your advice into consideration. Don’t worry you’re not ruining my fun, I really like getting honest feedback.

Sidez- Yah I don’t think I’m going to get rid of FlackBait for my screen name but I’m torn between sticking with flackstudios (which I’ll have to ad to my stationary) and coming up with something completely different.

Deker- Ha, yah that’s kind of how I came up with the name. I don’t really start trouble just cause trouble in multiplayer computer games. It was mainly a lan party name but I use it for everything now. I’ve used it for about 4 or 5 years.

3jorn- Unfortunately when I got a domain and started making my own website it was way before I even started to study design and identity. I really don’t like the studios part either.

Graphics Guy –I agree with your point that my work should speak for itself. My website design won’t be offensive either. I think I’m just worried what people will think of the name before they even visit my site. I’ll have to check and see how easy it is to get media temple to switch my domains if I decide to go with something else.
