You'd have to have a file for every page in Illustrator, wouldn't you? If you like PS and Illustrator, try Indesign.

Illustrator won't do even a 2-pg document. 'nuff said.

Everybody in this thread is on the right track, some really good advice so far... But, that isn't saying you can't learn quark. It's a pretty simple program. Primarily, you'll need to know how to import text from another document, place images, and get familiar with Quark's print dialog (it's old and clunky, very problematic).

I hate quark, too. But, it's the industry standard for mag/newspaper/book layout apps, so - my advice - bite the bullett and learn the SOB. :D

good luck!

Thanks guys. Last time I used Quark was over 1 1/2 years ago. Even my teacher hated it. But hey, what can I do, guess I will have to relearn it all.

i work at desert living magazine, www.desertlivingmag.com and we are strictly mac and quark for the page layouts, but for the dumb little ads that we much waste our time on we use illustrator/photoshop if we want to. Then ofcourse bring the tif file in to quark to layout the page with the ad on it.

Beautiful looking mag...

There is nothing wrong with Quark. There is a reason it's been the industry standard for so long. I was a huge Quark fan at first. However, Indesign has really pushed the bar. If you stuck me in another magazine but gave me Quark, I wouldn't complain. Working at a magazine, to me, is the greatest.

Have fun with it, it should be a blast.

Actually its not all that great, the production/publishing people are totally unorganized, so the art department gets hammered at deadline, and we do nothing but surf the net for two week before a week or two before deadline, while we wait for stuff to layout. They take way too long to get the work to us.

Hey, welcome to magazine land.

It wouldn't be a magazine without editors and/or writers being delayed or having the story in limbo with proffesionals or whoever verifying the information. When I was very very new, it took me a lot longer to get the process done. But now, its photo research for a week or so, organizing illustrators etc, then waiting a week or two for copy. In between it's a lot of waiting around. Then there are 2-3 weeks of insane work and everyone expecting that you can hammer the entire thing out on time. Ahhh..the rush, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It feels so good to get it done though. Funny enough, tomorow is my deadline. One major section needs the high res work done and a few other tweaks, a final copy edit and she's off to the printer.

Well, I have until April of next year to get everything down good. It's going to start off as a pretty small magazine. So they want me to do everything with the magazine that involves the graphics, layouts, cover design, basically any
design with the magazine. Do you guys recommend any type of books or anything I should really learn? Also, if you guys dont
mind me asking, if I did do all the graphics/layout, how much does the usual position earn that does all that work?
