I suppose you've been sleeping through English class as well?

I'd offer help, but I haven't studied any of that stuff in about 30 years.

Wouldn't an explanation just be that the water diffused into the areas of lower concentration to balance it out? I'm having a hard time picturing this graph in my head, but I think you can just tell what your graph means, like explain the movement of the water.

Units will help, 0.4 to -0.5 what? Chickens? Eggs? Vibrating rotary devices? 0 to 1.0 monkeys? Do you mean grams vs. molar? Or something like molar of area 2 vs. time?

Osmosis is a simple concept. It's the diffusion, or travel, of water in a cell - end of story.

The reason for osmosis is as random said. Basically, water, as do several things in science, try to reach a state called "equilibrium." As the name implies, equilibrium is achieved when all sides are equal - in this case, when all sides are in balance. simply put, if there are two areas, one with a high concentration of water and one with a low concentration of water, the water will travel from the high concentration of water to the low concentration of water to balance the two areas out.

Simply put, think of it this way.

Let's say we have this retarded shaped tank of water. Which way would water flow if the two sides were to balance out?
The more concentrated side (the side with MORE water) would flow to the side with less concentration (LESS water) and in that manner would even out.

Think of it that way and then try to put it in words.

By the way, once equilibrium is reached, water will flow equally from one side to the other but still will keep in balance and there will be no net gain - that is to say, there will be no overall gain or loss on either side.

Hope we helped at all :D
