...would you charge ? Hey, been around the web in search of a general pricing for a website...And I came up with...jezuz...There are actually people that have no skills whatsoeva' that puts up their own "I can build you a webpage" -site, and then lists prices as...3000.- swedish crowns ( around $375 ) for that first mainpage, then they charge you 'bout $25 per every subpage, and an hourbased fee when comes to updates...Are they for real ? I mean their portfolios really suck. Awful animated gif's heaven, they create and then charge these prices...:0 What would you charge for say...a medium family homepage ? A mainpage and a few subpages, nothing fancy, but fast, nice and likable...? Is it common to charge one fee for the 'hole package or do you split it up, and if so, how do you split the fee's ? I wonder 'coz I have this friend who is the president of a Round Table fraternity, and they would like a homepage, but can't afford a "real" designer and ask for help -"can you atleast find out how cheap we can get it for..." -"Can you do it..." So I promised I would ask around...I am willing to try it for once, could be fun, but they have to put that cost into the "book-keeping" so I have to charge them something, and I don't wanna be to cheap either...(b'cause I'm perverted, I'm no whore ;)...) -Edit-YES I AM !!!-/Edit Patric... |

This has been discussed dozens of times on here... why not just search? Some people charge a flat rate for the whole job, others charge hourly and give an estimate on the hours in the quote... Charging "per page" is a sure sign of an amateur though. Or saying you get "5 pages and 10 pictures, 45 paragraphs of text, 3 custom graphics..." that's just ridiculous. I personally charge a flat fee for all of my sites. And I just estimate the time it will take me to do the site and go with a rate I'm comfortable with based on that. Plus you have to consider if you're going to be taking pictures, if you'll be responsible for all of the content, how much trouble you think it's going to be to get stuff from the client, include the hours you spend for support, training, meeting with them, etc. |

Derek knows what he's talking about. Once you estimate the time to do the site (including all the extra things above), then multiply by YOUR hourly rate. Take that number and quote it as a flat rate. Clearly spell out the scope of the project in a contract, and state that if the work exceeds the scope, or the scope changes, you will charge them additional hours at your rate. Don't do it for free. Offer them a trade-for-services. Maybe they'll pimp their (legal age) sister out to you in exchange! |

It depends on how many pages, and how much code. I charged the equivilant of $600 for a small 4 paged site and that was cheap. www.houseofshu.com

Oh man...okay, I need some help guys. Since this thread is here, there's no need to start a new one. Here's my deal. I got into photoshop a little under a year ago. Then I lost my job a bit after. Now I have always been somewhat of an avid eBayer. So I started offering some graphic services to do web banners. I used to sell watches but decided to let that go. Anyhow, it's been going pretty well, making extra money on the side. Then I started getting emails about designing auction templates, and I've done them. Then offers to do layouts, so I did them. I was contacted by Payko, who is a side company to PayPal to do some graphics. Now I got contacted by some guy who wants me to do the graphics and program the site. He estimates his site to be about 100-150 pages. I thought "oh man, what!" I'm still learning CSS and PhP and not to mention MySQL, what will I do? The company is called Silstar and it's a sport fishing company. I've played here and there on some sites for friends, but that's all. I have no portfolio, all I have are my auctions that people can look at. You can view my animated banners here And my static banners here Now I'm not trying to get a free plug, but it's what I do, and it's all I have to show for now so please don't think I'm trying to sell anything, but I'm dealing with the same deal as Patteman....what does one charge? Web banners compared to a 100 page site pretty much pales in comparison by far. I'm barely getting the skills, and I'm lacking on the coding, so what can I do? Is there help? Would anyone be interested in looking into coding the site and brokering through me...man, I don't know, I think I'm a bit over my head here. Do I do it or not? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! |

Hmmm, a dilemma. You want to do it since it means a great deal of money (how much you're uncertain of) and you need them. But you also feel that you won't be fully competent, is that right ? Wow, seems like a more complexed issue than mine, I'd say ;) Is it possible for you to do it with someone ? Each guy do the thing he's good at ? And split the fee somehow...To gooder deal to say no to, I mean you have to start somewhere in order to get work in the future...But is this tooooo big ? Do not know. Perhaps leave it to someone interested here and get paid a "findersfee" for it... I wish you luck what ever way you go. Patric. |

Yeah Patteman, you pretty much nailed how I feel. I think I'm going to sleep in it tonight and see what I can figure out. Thanks for your input though...seriously, thanks. |
