Well, im sure you're aware that Walt Disney's son recently left Disney in disgust at the plans for getting rid of 2D animation all together and focussing on 3D animation. So now there are no Disneys in Disney. Well, now the closing down operation is taking place...a real shame http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=599&e=14&u=/nm/entertainment_disney_dc 2D is not dead, Spirited Away and Belleville Rendezvous were the proof of this last year...Disney just suck at telling stories. |

i want to see pixar do a killer 2d film just to show that medium doesn't matter, it IS all about the story. i can't stand michael eisner, you'd think that the fact they were doing great till katzenberg left might be an indicator to him and while the closing of the studio sucks, this is very cool news. i wish them the best of luck, those guys are gonna be in my prayers chris |

Yah look at their first 3d film Dinosaurs. If they plan on going that route all together they better consentrate on some better stories. |

Who liked finding nemo because of the great "3d animation"? They shouldn't be completely disregarding 2d.

They’d be missing out on a huge profitable market if they kept with the old Disney style. There’s probably some dumb survey out there somewhere that says more people see 3d movies or something. Why else would they can their trademark disney style? I think they're just doing what any buisness would do which is to go with the new and get rid of the old if it's not making enough money. |

not that there's necessarily research about anything, they're just looking at the numbers in a very simple fashion. sinbad (horribly marketed) failed for dreamworks, lilo & stitch wasn't so great for disney (tho for its budget it did well), brother bear didn't do too well either. finding nemo, ice age, etc., all did well. problem is no one's looking at the big picture. the fact that the films that did poorly were severly lacking in character development and plotline is somehow missed and the fault ends up lying with the medium (2d) because the 3d stuff (with great stories and characters you care about) is doing well. i got to see ed catmull from pixar speak to a very small group (like 30 people) a couple years ago, and the thing he stressed was that no matter how good their programmers are and how good their animators are, if what they're doing doesn't advance the story and characters they don't do it. sure, everything they do looks great but what draws you in is the fact that you care about what's going on. that can work in 3d, 2d, stop motion, whatever, it doesn't matter. why do small budget films like 'my big fat greek wedding' do so well? because they have characters you can relate to and end up caring about. that holds true for any story, any medium. do something that's not fomulaic and you might be surprised at the results. chris |

Well I'd have to agree with Fig on some points, but I would have to say that the main reason for a movie doing will in a theatrical release is marketing. I've never heard of Brother Bear. Never once did I see a preview for that. I saw previews for Finding Nemo on every channel at every time of day. I didn't go see it in the theater, but I did buy the DVD without ever seeing the movie. If you movie is good enough (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) you can rely on word-of-mouth and don't have to have a huge marketing budget. I will have to admit that I simply buy the 3D movies because they are 3D. I understand that I'm a small market niche, since I don't have kids, but am still buying the DVDs. The only major 3D movie that I don't own is Antz, that's just because I didn't get a DVD player until 1998, and Antz was released prior to me buying it. I think its less important for an 'eye-candy' movie to have a good plot. Look at porn: people aren't going to watch it for the plot. It's about the concept. I look at the 3D films the same way. I don't care about the plot (though I haven't run into a bad one yet), I'm buying the movie BECAUSE it's 3D. Now again, I'm not saying that I'm the majority, I'm just me, and don't know how my feelings are mutualized throughout society. |
