Has anyone ever used the 3-D program called lightwave? They have it on some of the computers at my school, and I opened it the other day, and it looked pretty interesting, although I know nothing about it.

Anyone ever use it, or know about it?

Yeha i've used it. It's a very good package overall..its a bit tricky to use in my opinion...although i think its cool the way they split the program up into Lightwave: Modelling and Lightwave: Animation, as separate programs. It's reanderer is excellent. Check out www.newtek.com to learn more. It's rival is C4D.

I thought the learning curve wasn't as steep as 3d Studio Max. If you’re really into modeling and animation Lightwave is a great program. You can make some pretty incredible stuff with it.

Don't want to steal anyone's thread, but I had a question about a 3D program, too.

Is Maya free? I heard that it was free for personal use, and although the learning curve is probably very steep, I'd might like to give it a try. :D Does anyone know?

<- lightwave user, so yes i GREATLY prefer it to max, very different but a shorter learning curve once you get used to the way the program "thinks". modeler is outstanding, great renderer too.

maya's ple (personal learning edition) is free, doesn't have all the features of the full version and it leaves an ugly watermark across your renders but it will let you learn a lot of the package. softimage xsi has an exp edition that's very similar with a more subtle watermark. check out http://www.alias.com/ for maya or http://www.softimage.com/ for soft xsi.
