Hello everyone...

I'm on Win98 1st edition. Christ I hate this operating system.

I want to upgrade to XP so I can install my copy of Maya and CS.

I saw at the microsoft website the I can upgrade to XP PRO.

But I called Dell to order along with some other stuff an got some chick telling me that I need to purchase the full version becasue...

"if something went wrong with my system, I would not have a backup" whatever that means.

Can anyone give me some advice please?

Regards
Fess

If you have the original Win98 CD you can upgrade. If you don't have a Win98 CD you might not be able to upgrade. I don't know. You should just be able to use your CD license key from 98 to upgrade.

You can upgrade from 98 to Xp. The only real issue is you will have to stay with Fat32 and upgade XP using Fat32 or convert all Fat32 filesystems to NTFS once you upgrade to XP, which is not always a good idea.

Not sure why you are calling Dell to order XP? You can go down to the corner computer store and buy it.

If you have a copy of Win2K, upgrade to that first. Then an upgrade from 2k to XP will be no problem.

I just went ahead an bought the full OS of xp pro becasue I don't want any problems like marble pointed out.

I go with dell becasue I get some good discounts and free shipping.

Yeah, marble...I could go to COMPUSA a few blocks away but the people working there really raise my blood pressure...

Seems I've got the "GHETTO" COMPUSA around my neighborhood....

So I opt for the Dell connection..

Thats silly. You'd pay for 2 upgrades when you only need to pay for one. You'd still have the same upgrade problems between Win98 and 2k as XP. From win2k on, Windows OS was completely re-written from previous versions. XP is very similar to 2k.

Who said anything about paying? I said if you have a copy of win2k, as in already.

In my experience, it's easier to convert from W98 to win2k than it is to go from W98 to XP. I've never been able to upgrade directly from W98 to XP, but W98 to win2k to XP has worked flawflessy everytime.
