I wonder how many more replies will be... "visit (insert hometown here) because it is this best, closest, most original thing I could think of." or "lets stay with Paavo cause he is the only guy in the world with beer." |

Where did you hear that from? I have been going between Canada and the states for years and all you need is 2 pieces of ID (drivers license and birth certificate will work). The passport is not required unless you fly. The administration was trying to push for mandatory passports for all travel to Canada and US, but I don't think that ever went through and they don't ask for money, at least on the west coast. |

Somehow the drivers license doesnt count as a photo ID anymore...and you need more than the certificate. Also because i dont already have a passport (even to drive up through maine/NY or NH) I needed to wait like 6 months due to background checks (yeah......like im a criminal) and a "waiting period" kinda thing to get one. If i did get one.....i would have to pay things like a "sept. 11 fee" and some other crazy stuff. I tried last year so maybe things have changed by now....but because of sep. 11 it all went to hell. I wanted to go on vac. in canada last october....but when i finally calculated everything i wouldnt be able go atleast until this summer. The whole situation was such a mess i gave up lol |

I go through the border all the time. You don't need a passport to drive through the border. But maybe they are being more strict back east. This is the current requirements for US citizens crossing into Canada and back: " * United States Passport (strongly recommended), or * Naturalization Certificate, or * Birth certificate (original or certified) or Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States PLUS unexpired government-issued photo identification* such as a state driver's license (this documentation may subject the passenger to additional questioning at the border)" |
