This depend on your host and you contract with them...

Most basic plan does not include sub domain (its an extra you have to pay for) If you have this option this is often done from you control panel of you site...

Now for a fifirent panel, agin this will depend on your host... ask them... not us

A subDomain is like a folder within your site that is another site.

You want it to be:

http://subdomain.yoursite.com

instead of www.yoursite.com?

when you create a real subdomain like zyconium.com/~halonium/
there will be a new folder created in the root directory
like
blah
blah
halonium
zyconium
other crap
mail stuff..
you only have access to whatever isin the subdomain

I must not be making myself very clear, I want to set up a subdomain like "name.swankstudios.com" and let my staff use it to test out scripts and put images up. I want to have a folder in my directory that each one can use. So that name.swankstudios.com/index.html will be their homepage and they can put stuff in the folder.
