You shouldn't need an additional plugin for mpeg I don't think. I think Windows Media Player can play them.

DivX is probably the most popular for downloading movies and tv shows off of the net. It has the best quality and compression rate, because it is based on Mpeg 4 I think. I've downloaded about 75 full tv shows in the past week and a half, and 80% of them are DivX files.

You do have to download the DivX players and codecs to be able to play it, but it's worth it.

Another good option is Quicktime, which in my opinion has the best quality of any of them. But does not compress as well as DivX in my experience. I wouldn't use Real or one of the WMP proprietary formats, because that would limit your viewers. Not many mac users have WMP installed, and I don't even know if it's available for linux or not.

MP4 through QuickTime....common, stable, good file sizes.

Just this weekend, I used QuickTime pro to compress a movie I output from ArtMatic Pro. Original file: 111 MB. Exported as an MP4 from QT: 1.2 MB.

Now that's some good compression!

mpeg. Since it's the easiest to handle, and basically anybody with Windows can play it.
