You have to reinstall your programs that don't work. Otherwise, the 2 previous answers are your only hope.

What virus did you get? Did you go to Symantecs site and follow detailed instruction on how to restore your system? Or did you just delete the quarantined files? If its something that was running on your computer then you probably deleted some system files (as you have noticed =\ )

A system restore will fix the registry, but if you deleted some system files or you have been running this install fro a long time - it wont do much good. If I were you I would try to back up what is possible and then do a clean re install. You can repair a messed up OS, but it wont be smooth runnins' for you.

I would stick the OS disc in and try a repair disk first. It will appear like you are re installing, but at some point it will ask if you want to repair the current install.

But realistically - back up and re install.

Yeah registry is not for the timid, and if you dont have a current back up of the registry it more than likely wont work. Image taking a snapshot of all your settings and programs, then 4 months down the road resetting them. Chances are they have changed pretty drastically, files have moved, etc.
