Does anyone ever feel like they're cheating when they design something using photohsop? Like some random arty thing that an artist would do with tangible materials? I'm in a 2-d design class in my college and my teacher is an artist. she makes stuff by hand that I could make w/photoshop. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, can there really be a photoshop artist? with exhibitons at art galleries? |

how is it cheating? it still involves skill, you just have more options available for you to use and make it better. i don't believe it's 'artistic' cheating at all.

IT's definitely art. Anything you do with a creative edge is definitely art. I grew up in an artist surroundings (my mom is a painter) and they use a lot of 'found' materials that in a sense is like using images and manipulating them or using computer generated material. Think of collage work. A lot of artists use some sort of collage material in their art. What difference is it if you are creating something from photoshop? Its a hip modern medium.

i am a painter and a designer. i think there is something about an original painting that photoshop art can't compete with. it lacks that 'POW' that a great painting hits the viewer with. you can't look closely and see brush strokes. i've got hundreds of years of history backing this up. that said, i also consider digital work art. i can do things with photoshop that i can't on canvas. i can do things on canvas that i can't do in photoshop. |

Not it isn't cheating. That's ridiculous. That's like saying using a pencil is cheating. You have to use a tool... what else would you use? your own blood with your fingers?

No matter what you create in Photoshop, it will never look quite like real paint on canvas, simply because it works within a 2D plane. When you print out what you create, its will only have simulated texture, not real, physical texture created from real brush strokes. Both are art. If you would create digital art for hanging in an art gallery, it would be considered a print, since it would have to be printed, after all. I don't see anything wrong with that in the least. If you want more of a true drawing/painting experience, Painter is a better choice to simulate such things on a computer. Photoshop 7's new brushes do go a long way to making Photoshop more of a real digital painting program. |

what I meant by cheating is using a brush (say one that you apply once and it covers the page with a cool look) in photoshop. Maybe 'cheap' would have been a better word. Because making something in Photoshop is easier than on canvas and you have tools in PS that take out a lot of steps. |
