i've been waiting for this, actually. always wanted to have a MacOS on my PC, but it could never happen unless i went out, and bought $1,000 worth of hardware and another $300 worth of software to emulate the damn thing. can't wait :D

This is not really a new development though.

Mac has started to realize that they can hold their niche for only long. After a while, being required to use hardware and software that is pretty much proprietary to one brand of computer will be draining on a user.

Of course, there are those few folks who swear by a mac because it's 'dumbed down' enough for them to plug it in and go. On the other end of the spectrum, you have pc-power users who wish to be able to maximize the performance of the dollar and get the best their money can buy. Sadly, most of the time, the best is run on the x86 platform.

If they ever do release OS X for the Intel platform you could probably look for Microsoft to start suing the companies that license it's operating system. You can look for them to lose. And then you might, just one day, see a Dell computer offering your choice of Linux Flavors, OS X or Windows.

I wonder what the intelligent people will choose. Personally, if I were buying a computer and had one of those choices for the Intel platform, I would probably go with OS X just because it is *nix based but it's sleek and sexy.

If Apple decides to switch, the processors they are looking at will likely keep their machines just as expensive, or moreso than they are now.

Proprietary technology I think would still be a part of a x86/CISC based Apple computer. If only because they'll probably just support only a few hardware configurations like they do now.
