Faded borders in rectangular images

How do I make faded borders on each side/corner of an image ?

The background of the webpage is white so I'd like to fade any image (especially if it's a dark color) into a white.

Can you give me some quick instructions or point me to a tutorial?

just select your first shape, then select just your corner with intersect selection (ctrl-shift i think) then add the gradient, your color to white.

There is an easier way to do this. First create a new layer beneath the image, fill it with a color (makes it easier to see the fading). Select the image layer and then select your rectangular marquee tool (M). Select an area of the image (not all the image), go to Select --> Feather. Depending on the size of the image and how much you want to fade, insert a number. Press ok, and inverse the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I using windows, don't know the short-cut for Mac). Press your delete button, and that should do the trick.

Ok, maybe not easier, but it does the trick for me :D

you could also ctrl click the layer you want to apply the effect to, then go to select>>modify>>contract and do it by 2 or 3 pixels.
then select>>inverse
then filter>>blur>>guassian blur. This gives somewhat of a more dramatic effect I guess, if you want to see what this looks like, check out my site, the image of the flea "the green thing" is dont this way, but it also doesn't fad into transparent.

yeah, to me, that looks like they used the guasian blur way of doing it. But, I have been wrong before.

Ah you mean like that, i though you just ment the corners. That's with gaussian blur yes, but i don't think things like that look good on a webpage.

Someone on another forum has taught me a quick and easy way...

- Draw an irregular shape around the image about a half inch from the borders using the Lasso tool.

- Select|Inverse

- Select|Feather about 20px

- Gradient Tool (radial)

- Draw from the center of the image toward any border.

You could also do it like this....

1: Select an irregular shape a few pixels inside the border with the lasso.

2: inverse selection and feather by 16....

3: Hit delete once or twice (or as many as desired). Make sure the background color is set to the same color as the one on you background....White maybe?

That outta do it....Easier or not?
