Many of the sites that offer "free hosting" also off paid hosting with increased features, bandwidth, storage space, etc. So you may want to check the free hosting thread as well.

Btw, I wouldn't recommend HostOnce to be listed here, they have been "branded" a fraud host at <a href="http://www.webhostingtalk.com" target="_blank">WHT</a> Like the name says, HostOnce and you'll never see your site again.

Question: Who has had personal experience using cyberpixels.com? Know of any sites hosted there?

Any comparisons with dot5hosting.com? They both look pretty good.

I do for the first question. Looks like Rebecca has taken care of Cyberpixels relatively well now. They have a lot of customers, probablyy 2000+, 4 servers of I'm not wrong. Their main target are teen sites(blogs, etc). You can give them a test run for a month to see if they suit your needs, since they have a 30 day money back guarantee. Their servers are located in California, if that matters :p

As for Dot5hosting, they have quite a clean record. If I were you, I'd give Dot5 a try since they're more established

I signed up all of my old works stuff (5 sites) to Dot5 about 9 months ago (give or take 1 ) and when I talked Chris, a tech, he said they'd been up for 6 months and not one downtime. He said they had gone into planning the business well over a year before taking on any clients. I have never seen any down time and the price is really nice for what you get. 500 megs and 20gigs for 9.99$ not bad. They've been great....

To be honest, if I see a host that doesn't put much on the website itself, I won't consider using their services.

You should have gotten an email with FTP info. You need to download an FTP program such as www.smartftp.com or FileZilla and enter in the FTP info and upload files to your site through that.

If you need more instruction, get on AIM/ICQ/MSN/YIM (the details are in my profile).

Yeah I didn't get any email with FTP info - just an email confirming that I bought the account. And also about the FTP programs... can't I just use Internet Explorer to upload my pictures? Or do I need a program to actually start building my site?

When did you sign up? Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours for them to fully activate your account and send the e-mail.

As far as the FTP, IE (and Windows Explorer) works depending on the OS of the server you're hosted on. I would recommend using a FTP client regardless. I like WS FTP Lite. It's free and works great.

The LE version is really easy once you figure out how to connect to a FTP server.

Check WS_FTP™ LE Support (http://www.ipswitch.com/Support/ws_ftp_le_support.html) webpage. Looks like you can download the User Guide and search their online Knowledge Base. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Don't use WS_FTP.

Get www.smartftp.com - it's the best.

Having used WS_FTP for years and started using SmartFTP this year, I will back that up. But WS_FTP is a lot less confusing.

When you do get the info it will be fairly straight-forward. You open the FTP program, find the fields where you enter the domain "ftp.yourdomain.com" then your username and password. Then hit connect and you should see a bunch of folders come up after a bit (along with WS_FTP's really annoying sounds®) and there will be a folder called public_html. Open that folder and dump all your files in there. Then they can be accessed from yourdomain.com/whateveryounamedthem.extension

If you are making a web page, just call it index.html (or.php or whatever) and put it in there and that will be the page you see when you type yourdomain.com

Don't use www.globat.com. It seems as though it's quantity over quality. And it is. I had a chat with someone who works there. Seems bad. (I addressed most of the things I saw that a good host should provide. I was extremely surprised that they are trying to get along with a custom control panel that they made.)
I'll post the chat if you want it for proof you shouldn't go there.

Oh and Dot5 blows... get your refund asap and go with a better host. Also ipowerweb is another one to stay away from...

*and as I have posted before, ignore those offers for "unlimited this and unlimited that...." They are just hype to get you to sign up. Point is, hardware and bandwidth costs money. They are gambling no one is actually going to send their bandwidth thru the roof and use 4 gigs of space. If you do, watch the server crash =) heck, test them out. Get a streaming flash video file and tell as many people as you can to view it at a certain time and see how good they are to their word by offering unlimited services. A shared server is never going to handle 15 GB of bandwidth in an hour.

I have been using midphase for almost a year now and havent had any trouble lately. 8 bucks a month unlimited bandwidth and free domain. Cant go wrong haha.
When i first signed up they where switching servers and moving or something and had some problems but that was only the first month. Glad I stuck with them even though i could have gotten a refund with 30 day money back if not satisfied. Midphase + $65 Referral for me through this link (http://www.midphase.com/newaff/redir.pl?a=0.46840438533491&c=1&creative=Banners|midPhase|TextLinks|TextLink&redirURL) Check them out... fast support and site i think. After going to that link type in givefive for 5 months free webspace when you buy 7 months... type this in browser http://www.midphase.com/emcoupon.shtml?s=7902 this offer ends 3/05/05 and I have just resigned up with this company BTW :) (2/17/05) going on two years NO problems.
