How can this be done (scrollable containers)

I want to have a scrollable container (similar to the one on the main page). That is the easy part, I want it to have a set of graphical (or text) links on the side of the page and when you mouseover a link the content in the scrollable changes to reflect information for that link. I do not want it to change on mouseout as I want to be able to scroll the contents. I also want a default set of text to be in there at page load (not associated with one of the links.

Anyone know how to do this?
