Want to know how to do this...

Ok, I really want to make a simple website for graphics and stuff like that, and basically show people what i got and throw in some info on myself. they way i wanna lay it out is very similar to this site http://www.geocities.com/doomtrainsdesigns/. By having the menu on left. news/data box in center, but no quick links to the right, i dont know that much about html and my question is how would i go about making the menu to the left just like it is, very simple just like it is? can anyone help me with this? im not trying to rip it, cuz the site designer said its cool but he dont have time to teach me...anyone know how? and btw, coudl ya exlplain it like im a newbie...cuz i am when it comes to html... thanks
