parsing xml and stuff like that :-/

hey all.
im making a site for a guild in the mmorpg Dark age of camelot, and i want auto updating character levels and stuff like that. so i asked costumer support how its done and they told me the only info they could give on the subject was that i need to parse their xml file... ive never done this sorta thing before and i dont have much of a clue what to do.. the site itself is mainly done in flash and im using some php/java.
