An iframe is like a regular frame, except that unlike a regular frame, it's more like a "floating" frame, in that it can be placed anywhere on the page, rather than being restricted to the sides or bottom. It's useful pretty much any time you want a frame somewhere other than one of the sides, or the top/bottom.

The major difference is that Iframes suck.

iFrames will do more harm than good to your site. One the graphics are downloaded, they are cached, and aren't being downloaded again anyway. Putting an iFrame in there just adds another scroll bar and another problem for people that use things other than a desktop browser to look at web sites. Like search engines, PDA's, cell phone browsers, screen readers, etc. It also makes it impossible to copy paste a link and send it to somewhere, link to individual pages, bookmark a secondary page on your site, and on and on and on...

One thing to note though. PDA's and cell phones dont use regular web sites. They use sites with a .wml extension. Just found that out since we are doing an XML workshop right now. lol.
