What filters do you use? do you have any pointers? I usually just fool around with curves,saturation and sharpen filters

A: Filter>>Blur>>Gaussian. No others. I haven't used lighting effects in almost a year.

Q: do you have any pointers?
A: Learn all of the tools photoshop has, not just the filters or a couple things in the image or layer submenu's.
