I came across a tutorial on the Designs By Mark web site that shows you how to create a pattern brush in Illustrator that fills in a path with the pattern of the brush. Can this be done in Photoshop 5.5, and if so how? You think the Pattern-Stamp is what they're talking about?

HardRock,
Mr Photoshop always answers your prayers... but sometimes the answer is NO.

What HardRock is talking about is a nifty technique whereby you can attach a repeating custom brush shape to a path in Illustrator. You can then move the path, alter it, etc., but no matter how curvy you make the path, your custom shape wraps, curves, and distorts appropriately so that what is created looks natural. Adobe's got to be able to sell more than one application, and this is one of the things Photoshop can't do as well as Illustrator. Here's what you can do:

1. you can create a custom brush from any image (max. size 1024 x 1024 pix.)

2. you can stroke a path with your custom brush shape.

The difference: The custom brush shape always retains it's original spacial orientation, so doesn't change direction, twist, distort, etc. Also, the stroke will move with the path if you alter it. This happens because you can only stroke a path with color or any painting tool (including the Pattern Stamp), but once the stroke is applied, it is rasterized, or pixelated, meaning it's stuck on the canvas.
