Web Site Copyright Date

I wasn't sure where to post this at.

The copyright date that is listed at the bottom of Web sites is determined how. When it just 2002, would this be the year the site was created? What is it when it's a range like 1997-2002 - is 1997 when the site was created and they've continued to make changes?

What do I put down if the site was created in 1997 but a entire new user interface basically a redesign was done in 2002?

I think it's the create date to present. If your site was made in 1997, but given a new look in 2002, I'd put 1997-2002.

i don't know anything about copyrights or whatever.


can you just put the little copyright symbol on your page if you feel like it? if you can, will it be legally binding, as in if someone steals an image off your site you can say it was copyrighted.


or do you have to go through some process to get your crap copyrighted?
