I'm thinking about installing and trying out the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Programor) and I'm wondering if anyone else has used it and how it compares to photoshop.

Its Free, nuff said
I never used.
But its free, its open source, it has some decent tuts and resources.
IT might not be as 'good' as photoshop but its definatly worth using i hear.

If you use the Windows Version let me know if you have any trouble. I've here vague reports of it not working as great on windows but never heard it specific from someone who had that problem.

I've used the Linux and Windows version. It was about a year ago though, so take that into consideration.

The linux version is of course rock stable... The features are very similar to photoshop. The keyboard shortcuts and everything are of course different though. Overall it's by far the best free image manipulation program.

The windows version was pretty crappy when I used it. It crashed several times, the GUI was terrible, overall it was just a big load of poo. I have no idea what it's like now though. So you'll just have to try it.

Urgh, I installed RedHat 7.2 on my old Pentium 166 MHz, my God that was the slowest thing. GIMP was hard to use as well, i couldn't even outline text with it. :(

RedHat probably wouldn't be slow if you configured it correctly. I'm sure there is a lot of extra stuff in it that you probably don't need. If you knew what you were doing and just set it up to do the things you need, it would fly on a 150mhz. (as much as anything can fly on a 150mhz anyway)

I didn't find GIMP hard to use, it's just different than photoshop. You can't expect it to have all the same buttons and shortcut keys...

From what I've used of Gimp on Windows, its got a lot of Photoshop functions, masking is even in there. But its interface is totally different. I could use it if I had to, but I really don't want to re-learn another graphics program.
