i have searched the web for hours looking for 3ds max tutorials that actually teach you about the program but so far all i find are specific effects tuts....anyone know of a tut site that can teach me the basics so that i can apply the knowledge to more then one effect?

Tutorials are pretty much geared towards certain special effects... That's true for any program. I would imagine that with a program as complex 3DS Max, it would be best to just buy a couple of books on the subject. Or read the manual that came with the program.
