pen tool adding a new layer...

is there anyway to make it so that in photoshop 7 when you use the pen tool it doesn't add another layer?

Not sure on 7, but on 6 you can click a tab in the top left (about under the word Image in your menu bar) with two squares - use the right one to 'create work path' & the left square creates a new vector shape out of what you draw with the pen, which, apparently, you don't want to do...
