Neon text invert problem

This is my first post here but have be reading this board for months. It has been a great help. I always try to search before I post. Well... this time I could not find my answer.
I have been tring the animated tutorial for neon text form Teamphotoshop http://www.teamphotoshop.com/photoshop/tutorials/ps_tut_ani_ps4.php) and when I get to the step that I have to invert it - only the text does (at least that's what it looks like). I start with white background and black text. When I invert it the text goes white and the background stays white.
I must be missing something.

by the way, I'm use PS6

You have the text on a layer. Merge the layer with the background, then invert.
