New layers when drawing lines?

How do I get new layers to appear when I draw lines? Like at the end of this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5z7yojQpxY&feature=related

I can only get the lines to stay on the first layer.

I have CS5

bottom of layer palette click new layer before you start your lines
