Simply click on the box that shows a small swatch example of the gradient itself. Move the gradient stops around or click on them to assign another color. Too many stops? Just drag them off the end of the color editing ramp. The stops on the top of the color ramp indicate opacity...black is 100%, white is 0%

Now, be a good kid and go read your manual and/or online help files .

Go to the paint bucket tool, then hold it down until your chooser comes up, then click the Gradient button.

After that, on the top, your Gradient toolbar will pop up.

On the far left, there is a pull down arrow. Click the Gradient (NOT the arrow).

Then a box will pop up where you can edit the gradient.
