is there an easy way to divide an image into a given number of equal parts?

I don't know of any program that'll do that programmatically or automatically, but both ImageReady and Photoshop (CS/CS2) can 'slice' a Photoshop image and then save it out (Save For Web / Save Optimized As) to a folder of images and an HTML file to bind them together. If you want to do that programmatically, you could probably automate Photoshop with javascript and control the slicing that way.
