Newb needs help with buttons

Long time reader first time poster. I have attached an image below so you all can see what I am talking about. Basically I made a button and then dragged it the image "jimmys life". When it gets on that image it seems to change the blending options for some reason. If you notice in the picture the dark gray area of the button has shifted for some reason. Any help would be great.
Oh one more thing any certain books you guys recommending for getting a good PS foundation?

I am not too sure I understand what you are asking. Are you sure the layers you drug were are in the same order on the new button?
