Photshop CS on XPP machine. I've created a new image by combining a car jpg and a scenery jpg. In the new image the car is floating over the scenic background. I have this new image saved as both a jpg and a psd. I'm able to add text to the new image but I can't add effects to the text, like Stroke or Drop Shadow etc. I've tried creating text in another new document and adding effects, but if I copy it onto the car\scenery image, the effects vanish. The same problem occurs with the car\scenery jpg or the psd. Advice would be very welcome  Thanks. |

I'm willing to bet it's because you're in 16bit/channel mode. Change it back to 8bit/channel and you should good to go.

As far as I can tell, both files are in 8 bit mode. The 'title bar' of both pics says: 'Layer 1,RGB/8*' Does that indicate 8bit? |

Yes that does indicate 8bit mode. Hmmmmm. I'll see if I can figure it out, but I honestly don't know what your problem may be. Hang on just a sec, I think I'm onto something. |

Ok, it's a longshot, but could this be the issue? Make sure your setting for your layer styles are like this (just where the arrow is pointing)... |

I regret to report that my settings are EXACTLY the same. I also regret to report that I opened a new image, created some text, added a Stroke and there it was. I just can't do it in my problem jpg :--( |

Well, I finally did it; I can now add text with effects! Here's what I did - I saved the original 40mb psd as a BMP. That's all. And straightway I was able to add text with Stroke to the bmp version. Now, that's weird. The psd itself won't allow effects to be added to text and neither will the jpg I saved from the psd. But the new bmp will. So, it's only a workaround - but it's better than nothing! Outpatient, thanks for your contributions. |

This is joke comes with standart package of Photoshop. Once you selected 'Hide all effects' from menu Layer > Layer Style it remains forever even document has no one layer. Check out this menu when your scenery jpg is active. If there you see 'Show all effects' then click on it to show.

Errrrrmmm... is this problem not just because text is a vector? In other words: 'raterize layer' Enables all the effects. Similarly, >Here's what I did - I saved the original 40mb psd as a BMP. That's all. And >straightway I was able to add text with Stroke to the bmp version. Yep. BMP only HAS pixels and no vectors - - so your text is automically rasterized. I bet you 10 euros and a crate of beer that you cannot edit the text after reopening your BMP. >Now, that's weird. The psd itself won't allow effects to be added to text and >neither will the jpg I saved from the psd. But the new bmp will. Just right-click the layer and choose 'rasterize'. Similar for the pen tool, the rectangle tool. But you lose more info when converting the whole thing to BMP, so this is better. Daan So, it's only a workaround - but it's better than nothing! I concur (honestly, who [besides me] uses this word?) with Daan. I do a lot of text effects in PS7 and find that rasterizing text allows me to add effects without compromising the sharpness/crispness of the text layer.
Errrrrmmm... is this problem not just because text is a vector? In other words: 'raterize layer' Enables all the effects.
Regards, OMMBoy |
