Need photoshop 6.0

I'm trying to make this http://www.phong.com/tutorials/sphere/

but in step 3 in says click on Preserve Transparency
well I don't think that is on version 6.0 so what do I do from here

preserve transparency should be on the layers pallet/menu/window/thingy...

it will be on the layers menu, its the checkerbox, something like preserver transparent pixels. or something.
