how do i make color images black and white????

Press Shift + Ctrl + U. Or go to Image > Adjust > Desaturate.

Another way to do it is to go to Image > Mode > Greyscale, but with this technique you won't be able to add colors anymore.

If so you will need to come back to rgb colors using Image > Mode >RGB colors.
