I have PS 7 and was wondering when I go File - New it defaults to Mode: Gray.

It just started doing that. I trashed the pref file and started over but it still does it. I looked through the preferences and don't see the option to set that. Help.

well, try creating a new file, then, change the gray mode to rgb mode then, hit enter. closed phtshp and open it again.
this may do the trick i hope.

The deault size and color modefor a new images is the last serting you enter...

Just create a new document with RGB colors...and close PS...
